Sleeve Gastrectomy
Sleeve gastrectomy is an operation to remove much of the stomach, leaving a smaller, tubular stomach. This provides a feeling of fullness and satisfaction with a limited amount of food intake. The exit valve (pylorus) of the stomach is not disrupted, therefore patients do not experience "dumping
syndrome" (intolerance to sugars).
Advantages of Sleeve Gastrectomy
- Can be done laparoscopically and can be safer in very large patients.
- There is no change to the intestine.
- Absorption of nutrients is unchanged.
Disadvantages of Sleeve Gastrectomy
- Long-term results are unknown.
- Vitamin supplements are required.
Patient Responsibility
Your success with sleeve gastrectomy will depend greatly on your involvement in an exercise program and adherence to nutritional guidelines.
