Sarah

Sarah is a cancer survivor who is thriving after more than seven years in remission. She was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a type of cancer that develops in muscles that are attached to bones.

Just three months into her chemotherapy and radiation treatment at St. Luke's, she developed veno-occlusive disease, a rare and serious side effect that caused her liver to begin to shut down. Sarah was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital, and after four months of living in the hospital, she was released to continue her cancer fight. She completed her treatment about 15 months after her diagnosis.

“We decided as a family to stay in Boise and have St. Luke’s be her primary caregiver,” Sarah’s mom says. “The care given to her was beyond exceptional. The whole staff from the oncology team, PEDS, PICU, Blood Bank, Imaging, Surgery, Janitorial, Hospital School, Pharmacy, Gift Shop, knew Sarah by name. There are so many ugly sides of cancer, but the wonderful side is the community that comes to help you and your child in the cancer fight.”
